They were selected from 361 nominations received by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden's Solna, for their discoveries concerning the biological clock.

Professor Robash is a researcher at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, Young at New York's Rockefeller University, and Hall is at the University of Maine.

Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolution.

The Nobel committee says the scientists’ work has opened up new areas of research and increased understanding about the importance of getting enough sleep.

The three scientists won the USD1.1 million prize./.
