US Senate confirms Perdue as Agriculture Secretary

Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue on April 24th was confirmed as US Secretary of the Agriculture Department, with a vote of 87-11.

As Agriculture Secretary, he'll be in charge of around 100,000 employees and the nation's food and farm programs, including agricultural subsidies, conservation efforts, rural development programs, food safety and nutrition programs such as food stamps and federally-subsidized school meals.

"Today is a great day for American agriculture. Secretary Perdue is a strong friend of America's farmers and ranchers, and I know he will work to ensure that agriculture is a top priority in the new administration," says House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway./.
