Frank-Walter Steinmeier elected President of Germany

Germany's Parliamentary Assembly has elected Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Social Democrat, as the country's president.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier , born in 1956, is one of Germany's most popular politicians.

Lawmakers and representatives from various social fields delegated by Germany's 16 states are represented in the Assembly.

He was elected by the vast majority of the Assembly, receiving 931 out of 1,253 votes. His predecessor, Joachim Gauck, did not seek another term and will step down on March 18th.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is due to take office as the 12th Federal President of Germany on March 19th, 2017.

He previously served as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2017, and as Vice Chancellor from 2007 to 2009. He was Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2016./.
