He was welcomed with military honours by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on May 15th.

Macron, 39, is the youngest French President in France's modern history, the youngest leader since Napoleon.

It is traditional for French leaders to make Berlin their first European trip. President Macron wants to boost the French-German drive at the heart of Europe, and press for closer cooperation, including creating a parliament and budget for the eurozone.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, in a press conference, declared the French-German relationship as crucial to the European Union.

The two leaders agreed to draw up a roadmap to deeper European Union integration and opened the door to changing the bloc's treaties to facilitate ambitious reform.

Merkel said that Germany needs France to succeed, emphasizing that "Europe will only do well if there is a strong France"./.
