The Chinese delegation is headed by Vice Premier Liu He, who also came as the special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping; while the US team includes Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The discussion aimed to resolve outstanding issues regarding economic and trade relations between the world's two largest economies, as negotiators of both sides have worked relentlessly to achieve consensus on issues of major concern before March 1st.

On February, 20th, the Reuters reported that US and China were looking at a 10-item list of ways that China could reduce its trade surplus with the US, including by buying agricultural produce, energy and goods such as semiconductors.

US tariffs on USD200 billion worth of imports from China are scheduled to rise to 25% from 10% if the two sides cannot reach a deal.

The US and China are engaged in a trade war, as each country continues to dispute tariffs placed on goods.

Both sides have imposed tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of goods. The US has hit USD250 billion of Chinese goods with tariffs since last July, and China has retaliated by imposing duties on USD110 billion of US products.

At a meeting on the sideline of the G20 summit in Buenos, Argentina, last December 1st, the two leaders agreed to halt new trade tariffs for 90 days to allow for talks./.
