At least six dead after tourist boat sinks in Colombia

A boat carrying around 170 tourists has sunk in a reservoir in northwestern Colombia, leaving at least six dead and 28 missing.

President Juan Manuel Santos said that 122 people were either rescued or found their own way to shore.

"Nobody really knows what happened," he said.

He added he had been told "the boat had a capacity greater than the number of people on board, so that it was not due to overloading" that it sank.

Colombian officials originally said nine people had died, but later lowered the figure to six. Around 122 of the 170 people on board have been rescued.

Firefighters and scuba divers are involved in a major rescue operation to save passengers aboard the multi-storey ferry.

It is not yet clear where the tourists were from or what caused the accident./.
