President Donald Trump greeted around 2,000 US and Japanese service members and their families, as he made his first official visit as President to Japan.

Trump’s visit to Asia including Japan, the People’s Republic of Korea (RoK), China, Vietnam and the Philippines, is the longest trip to Asia by any US President in the last 25 years which is intended to demonstrate America’s commitment to strengthening long-standing US alliances and expanding new partnerships.

Addressing US troops at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo, he pledged to ensure the military had the resources needed to keep peace and defend freedom.

A senior White House official said the two leaders Donald Trump and Shinzo Abe have developed a close bond since Mr. Trump took office in January.

After Japan, the President’s next stop will the RoK, where he will have a bilateral meeting with President Moon Jae-in. Trump will meet with service members, and also is slated for a speech at the National Assembly in Seoul.

Before arriving in Japan, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he expects to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hopes to enlist his help in changing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s behaviour. He will likely meet with Putin on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Vietnam./.
