Two senior US diplomats from the State Department, including Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton, will co-lead the American delegation for the trilateral dialogue.

The dialogue comes ahead of a summit April 17th-18th between the US and Japan that aims to reaffirm their alliance, according to the White House.

Last week India External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Japan to co-chair the 9th India - Japan Strategic Dialogue with Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono.

The first ministerial meeting between the three countries took place in September 2015 and was hosted in the US. Prior to that meeting, high-level trilateral coordination was ongoing, but at a lower diplomatic level than that of foreign ministers./.
