The ceremony came three days after Admiral Sim was tapped as the new chief of naval operations.

Mr. Sim Seung-seob, 55, will replace Um Hyun-seong who is set to leave office after more than two years of service at the helm of the Navy.

"He is equipped with the professionalism needed to ensure the military preparedness posture and capabilities to command maritime operations, and moreover, the strategic knowledge in preparation for the future security environment and ability to foster military cohesion," the RoK Ministry of National Defense said in a press release.

Mr. Sim graduated from the Korea Naval Academy, and served in a number of key positions within the Navy before serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"Now, the Korean peninsula is at a great turning point that will lead us into a new era of peace and prosperity," Mr. Sim said during his speech at the Gyeryongdae military headquarters.

"Even if there was a situational change, the values of national defense and security do not change... The military can garner love and trust from citizens by propping up the government's policy with strong power," he added./.
