The announcement comes days after Mr. Prayut met with the US President Donald Trump and told him they would hold free and fair elections in 2018.

Prayuth, head of the ruling junta or National Council for Peace and Order, said the exact election date would be announced in June 2018.

"Around June we will announce the date for the next election," Prayuth told reporters at Bangkok's Government House.

"In November we will have an election."

The statement was made one day after a bomb hit a military hospital in the centre of the capital city of Bangkok, injuring dozens of people./.
