The current most urgent issue is to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and diplomacy would be the only remedy, said Jeffrey Feltman, the UN under-secretary general for political affairs who has finished his visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in five days.

He said a diplomatic solution could be achieved through sincere dialogue. His visit was hoped to create momentum for the UN’s attempts to resolve DPRK’s missile issues.

Mr. Jeffrey Feltman added that time is of the essence to resolve tensions on the Korean Peninsula peacefully.

During his visit, Mr. Jeffrey Feltman met with Ri Yong Ho, DPRK’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Their meeting came at a particularly tense time, a week after the DPRK tested an advanced long-range missile and the Republic of Korea (RoK) conducted military drills with its ally, the United States.

Mr. Ri and Mr. Feltman “agreed that the current situation was the most tense and dangerous peace and security issue in the world today,” the UN said in a statement.

The visit was the first trip there by a top UN official since 2012./.
