According to the official, the 2.5-meter-high wall will be erected this autumn to replace the metal fence which was erected around the globally-recognized 324-meter-tall landmark during the Euro football tournament last year.

The glass wall surrounding Eiffel Tower, which was constructed in 1889, will prevent individuals or vehicles from storming the site, Director Mayor Jean-Francois said.

The French capital has been on high alert since attacks by jihadists in November 2015 left 130 people dead.

Last July, 86 people were killed when a lorry ploughed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern city of Nice.

The French newspaper le Parisien reported that the project would cost approximately USD17 million.

The Eiffel Tower is one of France's most visited landmarks, attracting more than six million visitors each year./.
