Duterte signed Cayetano's appointment shortly before leaving on a six-day tour of Cambodia, China, and Hong Kong.

Cayetano, who is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, for the Universal Period Review of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, was Duterte's running mate in the May 2016 elections.

He is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

Cayetano replaces Acting Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, a career diplomat who temporarily occupied the post after Duterte's first appointee.

Alan Peter Cayetano, born in 1970, previously served in the Senate of the Philippines from 2007 to 2017, and is the brother of former senator Pia Cayetano./.
