Mr. Kenyatta was re-elected with just over 54 percent of the vote, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off, according to an announcement from the IEBC. Mr. Odinga, 72, the opposition leader, received 44.7 percent of the vote.

Speaking after the result was announced, Mr. Kenyatta offered an olive branch to the opposition, urging national unity and peace.

“I reach out to you, I reach out to all your supporters,” President Kenyatta said in comments directed at Mr. Odinga. “To our brothers, our worthy competitors, we are not enemies, we are all citizens of the same republic”.

In Nairobi and other towns in Kenya, the supporters took to the streets to celebrate, honking car horns and blowing whistles.

Uhuru Kenyatta has become the fourth President of Kenya since 2013. He, 56, is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first President, and his fourth wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta./.
