Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said on state television that Venezuela’s US-based oil subsidiary Citgo, a unit of state oil company PDVSA, would cooperate with local authorities in Houston, Texas, to distribute the funds.

"We are planning to earmark a percentage of the sales of our production of Citgo gasoline to spend on housing construction ... and, in the initial phase, on the refugees from the floods," Mr. Jorge Arreaza said.

This is not the first time Venezuela has come to the aid of the needy in the US. For years, it has supplied low-income US families with free fuel to heat their homes in winter.

Earlier, Hurricane Harvey hit the US State of Texas with torrential rain and heavy winds, killing at least ten persons.

The storm is the strongest to hit the US since Charley in August 2004, and the most powerful to hit Texas since Hurricane Carla in 1961, which killed 34 people, according to the Houston Chronicle./.
