Despite less than ideal weather, changing market prices and a reduction of labourers, Quang Ninh province’s 2013 winter-spring season sees 100,000 tonnes of food output.

Rice productivity reaches 94,000 tonnes, with the productivity rate of over 540 kilograms per hectare, roughly equivalent to the same period last year.

In addition, the province has sowed nearly 37,000 hectares of crops, including 17,000 hectares of rice, a year-on-year increase of 66.2 hectares.

These results have been achieved in spite of drought across the country. From early in the season, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development worked with localities to inspect the source of water and balance it for production.

Measures to store water, dig channels, upgrade irrigation works and prevent water waste were carried out.

Meanwhile, at places that could not ensure the source of water, a shift of crop structure was conducted, while farmers were promptly assisted with capital to fight drought.

To promote high output in the next season, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will focus on encouraging farmers to care for the land, preparing enough seeds and fertilizers to serve production./.
