(CPV) - As many as 68 giant clam (Tridacna gigas) shells were discovered and seized by the Customs Supervision Team No. 1 and the police of Ka Long ward on March 14 in Ka Long ward, Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province.
The giant clam shells weigh 2,386kg, with the average size of each shell 50-73cm. They are sold at VND500,000 – 40,000,000 each, depending on dimension and weight. This is a rare aquatic species, listed in Vietnam Red Book and the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is in danger of extinction and exploitation of the giant clam from the sea is banned.
The Custom Supervision Team No. 1 is completing the profile to hand over the volume of the giant clam shells to authority for further investigation and appropriate action./.
