Currently, around 85% of the population in Tien Yen district in the northern province of Quang Ninh has access to clean water and hygiene facilities.

The recent improvements to living conditions increase rural innovation, helping to create social progression and economic development of the district.

In August 2013, the rural development sub-department under the Quang Ninh provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development built the Ca Cai Than concrete dam in Khe Luc hamlet, Dai Duc commune. The installation provides water for over 10 hectares of paddy fields, as well as a sustainable water source for around 40 households.

“Water shortage has been really problematic for us in the past. In summer season, we often walked 4-5 kilometers each day to carry water for daily uses and rice growing. Water now comes to every household”, Ms Ly Moc Lo from Khe Luc hamlet, Dai Duc commune happily explained.

So far, there are 5,300 meters of running water pipe from four water stations in Dai Duc commune, providing water for daily use and irrigation to 88% of its population. This sustainable water source has effectively supported agricultural production, assisted the fight against poverty and promoted healthier living. In remote hamlets without water sources, local authorities are actively repairing piping systems, calling for investment from organizations and individuals to reach the goal of bringing clean water to 100% of households.

According to Ninh Van Cao, Chairman of Dai Duc commune People’s Committee, running water has helped to improve quality of life for the people, and has reduced illness. Khe Lang is now the last hamlet in the commune without running water.

As one of the poorest communes of the district, since 2010, people in Dai Duc commune have seen steady increases in access to clean water. This is a key contributing factor to accelerate socio-economic development and national program to build a new rural model in the province./.
