Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen said that in 2021, due to the serious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were times the health sector faced a shortage of blood donors, making it difficult to provide treatment for patients.

Noting that the Red Sunday blood donation program is very meaningful, he said that from a blood donation point with nearly 100 blood units in 2009, in over 13 years of organization, it has spread to more than 40 provinces and cities across the country, and each year it receives from 50,000-60,000 units of blood.

Thanks to the joint effort, consensus and enthusiastic response of a large number of people across the country, the amount of blood received has basically met the needs of emergency and treatment for patients during the year.

According to Deputy Minister Tuyen, after more than 28 years of launching the voluntary blood donation movement, Vietnam has achieved very encouraging results, from receiving more than 100,000 blood units in 1994 to 1.3- 1.4 million units of blood now. “Such an event as Red Sunday contributes to satisfying the need of blood for the health sector to treat patients,” he went on to say.

Last year, Red Sunday was held in 43 provinces and cities, mobilising over 61,000 units of blood.

Throughout 13 years, over 200,000 units of blood have been collected in the program./.
