Vietnam’s Sea and Islands

A great requiem was organized at Nisshikutsu Pagoda in Tokyo by the Vietnam Buddhist Association in Japan to commemorate martyrs sacrificed at Gac Ma battle (March 14th, 1988) on March 4th.

In early days of the lunar New Year, cadres, soldiers, forces and people on Spratly islands have boosted production. Accordingly, many trees have been planted to create a green environment.

Sun Group, a prominent real estate developer in Vietnam, inaugurated a sea cable car route in An Thoi town, Phu Quoc island district, Mekong delta Kien Giang province, with the aim of serving tourists on the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) festival which is several days left.

The Kien Giang provincial People’s Committee has issued Decisions 2931, 2932 and 2933, recognizing Nam Du archipelago, Lai Son island in Kien Hai district and Hai Tac archipelago in Ha Tien town as local tourist areas.

The Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee has decided to earmark nearly VND27 billion to support organizations and individuals conducting offshore fishing.

In 2017, agencies, businesses and individuals donated over VND223 billion to support the nation's sea, islands and the poor. The money was used by the Ho Chi Minh city Fatherland Front to care for cadres and soldiers working at border areas and islands, and poor families; and assist people in disadvantaged localities.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the High Command of Border Guard have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthening and improving the effectiveness of culture, sports and tourism and family-based activities in border areas and islands in the 2017-2022 period.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has approved adjustments to the master plan for Vietnam’s inland container depot development to 2020, with a vision to 2030.

An art performance “Spring on distant islands” was held for the 8th time on December 17th to raise funds to support beneficiaries’ and island and frame-house soldiers’ and islands’ families, and give scholarships to pupils who are children of poor navy soldiers or poor fishermen.

A meeting was held in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on December 15th to review the dissemination of information about the country’s sea and islands for 2013-2017 and the organisation of exhibitions of maps and documents affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes.

Nearly 150 photos on Vietnam’s sea and islands are on display at an exhibition which opened in Hanoi on December 14th.

The largest steel ship for fishing and logistic service in the central coastal region was launched in Da Nang on October 25th.

An exhibition named "Vietnam, the country and people - Looking from the sea and islands" was launched by the Ministry of Information and Communications and Vietnamese Embassy in France, on October 20th - 22nd.

The Sea and Island Club in Germany on October 18th organized an exchange toward the homeland’s sea and islands, with many meaningful and practical activities such as map and photo exhibition on Hoang Sa-Truong Sa, art exchange, discussion of ideas and donation to support the army and people living and doing missions on islands.

More than 70 photos which tell the stories of over 200 people who visited Truong Sa in May 2017 are on display at an exhibition in Hanoi.

A conference on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is being held in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India, taking the theme “UNCLOS: Solutions for Managing the Maritime Global Commons”.

Over 30 billion was mobilized from organizations and individuals to add to the fund for sea and islands during the 5th art performance looking towards the nation’s sea and islands, held by the Ho Chi Minh city Fatherland Front in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh city Television on September 21st.

A great requiem for martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty was organized at Dai Phuoc Pagoda, the first Vietnamese pagoda in Myanmar, on September 10th.

An exhibition on Hoang Sa and Truong Sa opened at Giao Thuy district Cultural House in the Red River Delta province of Nam Dinh on August 29th.

An exhibition titled “Hoang Sa, Truong Sa of Vietnam - Historical and legal evidences” opened in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang on August 25th.

The exhibition “Vietnam’s Hoang Sa and Truong Sa - Legal and Historical evidences” opened on August 10th in Kon Ray district, the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) always supports the early approval of an effective and legally-binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), the Foreign Ministry’s Spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said at a regular press conference in Hanoi on August 3rd.

China’s construction and opening of a cinema on Phu Lam island in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago violate Vietnam’s sovereignty over the archipelago, said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang.

An exhibition on 21 pieces of stones affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Truong Sa Archipelago has opened at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Hanoi, as part of activities in July at the village.

The exhibition “Vietnam’s Hoang Sa and Truong Sa – Legal and historical evidence” will be held in the northern mountainous Tuyen Quang provincial Museum from September 26th to 30th.

The central Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee on July 11th inaugurated a national flagpole and opened the Con Co island tourism route.

A group of 60 border guards who teach, encourage children to go to school, and make contribution to educational cause in border areas and islands, and are loved by local parents, will be honored at the program on sharing with teachers.

Apart from practising, studying and protecting the nation’s sea and island sovereignty, soldiers on Spratly Islands have increased breeding and plantation to improve their quality of life.

More than 100 woodblocks and official documents from during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) demonstrating Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos are on display at an exhibition which opened in Da Lat city, the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, on July 3rd.

Early each morning, fishing boats land at Ly Son port bringing fresh seafood. Although it lasts only some two hours, the Ly Son fish market impresses visitors with the good quality of its seafood.
