Continuing to promote human rights achievements in Vietnam |
Participating in international human rights conventions is a regular and consistent policy of Vietnam, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment and strong political determination in ensuring and enforcing international law standards on human rights. In particular, after becoming a member of the United Nations in 1977, Vietnam has actively and proactively participated in most international conventions on human rights. So far, we have ratified and joined 7/9 basic United Nations conventions on human rights; ratified and joined 25 conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO), including 7/8 basic conventions. Vietnam is truly a bright spot, a pioneer in implementing commitments.
Vietnam strictly complies with the obligations of international conventions to which Vietnam is a member or participant. We have successfully submitted and defended all national reports related to international human rights conventions. Vietnam's achievements in ensuring human rights are highly appreciated by the international community. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres once assessed Vietnam as an important partner of the United Nations, having made many practical and effective contributions to the United Nations' peacekeeping activities. This good relationship needs to be further strengthened in the coming time to promote peace, sustainable development and human rights in the world."
With priorities in the term of membership of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, continuing the tasks and goals being implemented since assuming this position, since the beginning of 2024, Vietnam has actively preparing for activities at the High-Level Meeting of the 55th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), held from February 26-29, 2024, in Geneva (Switzerland).
The discussion content included concerns, approaches and the need for cooperation on urgent global issues such as recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and progress in implementing sustainable development goals, responding to non-traditional security challenges such as climate change, food security, water security, inequalities and the "dark sides" of digital transformation, ensuring the rights of vulnerable groups. Different issues, especially related to great power competition, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Israel - Hamas, and the human rights situation in some countries, are expected to continue to be discussed by the leaders of countries mentioned in this session.
With clear messages, the Vietnamese delegation attending the 55th Regular Session of UNHRC led by Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son once again affirmed the commitment of Vietnam to be responsible for human rights issues globally.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son |
In his speech at the Meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized the role of the Council in promoting the implementation of Resolution 52/19 proposed by Vietnam, especially calling on countries to promote respect for and mutual understanding, tolerance, inclusiveness, unity and appreciation of differences, dialogue and cooperation.
In addition, "With a strong commitment to promoting and protecting human rights as well as improving the activities of the UNHRC, Vietnam has decided to run for election as a member of the UNHRC for the 2026-2028 term", Minister Bui Thanh Son once again demonstrated Vietnam's determination in this issue when, at the same time, he called on countries to support Vietnam's efforts when making a statement in front of hundreds of delegates.
Along with that is the spirit of positivity, initiative, pioneering, and "setting an example" when participating in UNHRC. Next, at Session 56 in June 2024, Vietnam proposes an annual Resolution on ensuring human rights in the context of climate change. Vietnam has submitted its National Report under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) cycle IV, which has implemented nearly 90% of the recommendations received in 2019.
At the same time, the head of Vietnamese diplomacy also had a series of meetings with senior officials and leaders of countries participating in the meeting to promote consensus on Vietnam's initiatives as well as raising awareness and implementing commitments on human rights.
In the coming time, Vietnam will continue to protect and promote the implementation of human rights, while strengthening international dialogue and cooperation on human rights; provide widespread information about achievements so that domestic and world public opinion can clearly understand, actively contributing to the world's common goal of better protecting and promoting human rights, contributing to maintaining an environment of international peace and security, national independence and social progress; and at the same time, continue to increase attention to taking care of the people's material and spiritual lives, reduce poverty, and well implement social security policies./.
