Besides taking care of creating stable jobs and improving income levels for workers and employees, improving their cultural and spiritual life are very important tasks of trade unions at all levels.

According to a survey by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, more than 60% of workers in industrial parks don’t watch television or listen to the radio; 85% of them don’t read books or newspapers; 80% of them don’t do exercise or play sports regularly; 65% of them don’t participate in mass cultural activities.

The report of the Hanoi Labor Federation shows that in the city, there are three industrial parks of Thach That - Quoc Oai, Thang Long and Phu Nghia, that have housing projects for workers but it only meets about 20% of workers’ demands.

Therefore, the majority of workers have to rent motels in residential areas and live in small areas. The public welfare facilities such as cultural houses, sports and entertainment areas, and schools for workers' children only meet a very small part of the need.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loc, working for a company located in Dong Anh district, said that he and his colleagues spend most of the day working and working overtime to earn income to make a living.

Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Hanoi Industrial and Export Processing Zones Authority (HIZA), informed that Hanoi has 10 industrial zones, nine of which are operating with an occupancy rate of 95%. About 166,000 workers are working in these industrial zones, but there are only seven cultural activity facilities for them. However, since coming into operation, these cultural activity facilities located in these industrial parks have been maintained and they have become a familiar address for many workers to come to relax after their hard work time.

Mr. Vu Manh Tiem, Deputy Head of the Department for Popularization and Education under the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, said that in recent times, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor has strongly directed and deployed many models and methods to trade unions at all levels to improve spiritual and cultural life for workers and laborers.

Notably, to contribute to improving the reading culture for workers, officials, and laborers while reflecting the reality of life, work, needs, aspirations of workers and trade union activities, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor in collaboration with the Vietnam Writers’ Association has successfully organized a literary competition on the topic of workers - trade unions for the 2021 – 2023 period with nearly 500 novels and short stories by 312 authors.

The National Workers' Football Championship 2023 has been held for the first time, receiving the attention and support of Party and State leaders, party committees, local authorities and businesses, attracting active participation of trade unions at all levels, workers, and employees, creating a healthy playing ground, contributing to improving health and strengthening solidarity among workers and employees.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Labor Federation Nguyen Huy Khanh said that as of October 2023, 61 cultural activity facilities for workers across the city have been implemented effectively. This is a model that the City Labor Federation has combined with business owners to invest. At the facilities, depending on the area, it is possible to arrange a bookcase or place a tennis table, chess, Chinese chess or benches for workers to rest and take a nap. Some companies also provide television, speaker, and amplifier systems so that trade unions can easily broadcast their newsletters, and workers can sing karaoke or celebrate their birthdays.

"Caring for workers’ spiritual life in this way will help them become more attached to the business, regenerate their labor force, enhance their creativity, and contribute to the development of businesses," Mr. Khanh affirmed./.
