VFF President appointed Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee Secretary

The Politburo on May 10th granted a decision assigning Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member (12th term) and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, to be Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee.

On behalf of the Politburo, Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the Party Central Committee Commission on Organization, announced the Politburo decision on personnel work. 

The Politburo decided to remove from his position as Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee (term 2015-2020) Dinh La Thang, and assign him to the position of Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee Commission on Economics.

Under the Politburo decision, Mr Nguyen Thien Nhan was appointed to be Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee.

Coming from Tra Vinh province, 64 years old, he is a Professor of economics and doctor of cybernetics, and fluent in the English and German languages. Mr Thien Nhan is a member of the Party Central Committee term X, XI and XII; and National Assembly deputy term X, XII, XIII and XIV.

Newly-appointed Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee was educational attaché of the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany.

In 1997, he was member of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Executive Committee, Director of the city Department of Science and Technology. After that, he was Standing Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee and Minister of Education and Training in 2006.

In August 2007, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Education and Training until 2010. He continued to be assigned as Deputy Prime Minister at the 13th National Assembly in 2011.

In May 2013, at the 7th PCC meeting, he was elected to be Politburo member. Four months later, he was elected as President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front./.
