UK, Vietnam open up new opportunities for cooperation

Politburo member, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed his pleasure with the good development of the bilateral Vietnam - UK relationship.

Mr. Nhan, on December 3rd, hosted a reception for Duke of York, Prince Andrew, who is on a working visit in the city.

During the reception, Mr. Nhan appreciated Prince Andrew’s visit when both countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, considering it a message showing the UK Government’s and Royal Family’s respect for the Vietnam - UK bilateral relationship.

Asserting that the bilateral relationship is developing well, Mr. Nhan noted that the Ho Chi Minh city - UK trade turnover reached USD795 million in 2017. There are currently 146 UK projects worth USD556 million in the city.

He also appreciated UK businesses’ strengths in infrastructure, energy, finance - banking and insurance, and said he hoped Prince Andrew will encourage UK businesses to invest in the city, especially in its urban innovation projects and start-ups.

In terms of education, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee suggested that Prince Andrew should support the city in training high quality labourers, increase the number of scholarships to Vietnamese students, and promote Vietnam’s image among UK residents.

Speaking highly of Ho Chi Minh city’s dynamic development, Prince Andrew said that he is impressed with the city’s and Vietnam’s wave of start-up businesses, confirming that he will deliver his message in continuing to expand cooperation in all areas.

He stressed that 2018 is an important milestone in the bilateral relations as the countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. In addition, it offers opportunities for both sides to develop practical cooperative programs./.
