The statement was made as Vietnam is the only candidate among Asia-Pacific nations for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term ahead of the vote on June 7th.

Praising Vietnam’s contributions, Ambassador Cheikh Niang noted that Vietnam excellently realized its role as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council term 2008-2009. “Vietnam pursues peaceful guidelines and its important role has been recognized by the international community,” he said, adding that Vietnam always reveals itself as a responsible country with the region’s tension and disputes on some issues.

According to the Senegal Ambassador, Vietnam being chosen as the only regional candidate for the non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term is not accidental.

He stressed that although Vietnam has experience in the seat, if it is voted in, there are a lot of challenges ahead, first the identification of priorities and suitable working agenda. “African countries expect that Vietnam will understand their aspirations and play an active role in promoting the addressing of regional issues,” he said./.
