António Guterres to be next UN secretary general

Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres will be the next UN Secretary General, after the security council agreed he should replace Ban Ki-moon at the beginning of next year.

A formal vote took place in the UN Security Council on October 5th to confirm the choice of nominee.

Guterres, 67, will replace the incumbent Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, whose second five-year term ends on December 31st.

“Today after our sixth straw poll we have a clear favourite and his name is Antonio Guterres,” Churkin told reporters with his 14 council colleagues standing behind him on Wednesday. “We wish Mr. Guterres well in discharging his duties as the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the next five years,” Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin  said.

António Manuel, born on April 30th, 1949 was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. He also served for a time as President of the Socialist International. He served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015./.
