In the DPRK, April 15th is known as the Day of the Sun, the anniversary of the 1912 birth of the country's founder Kim Il-Sung, whose son Kim Jong-Il succeeded him and grandson Kim Jong-un, the current leader, inherited power in turn.

On the Day, the country's biggest national holiday, tens of thousands of people turned out to pay tribute to their leaders, laying flowers and bowing to giant statues of Kim Il-Sung and his son and successor, Kim Jong-Il, on top of Mansu Hill.

The DPRK has held a series of sports and cultural events over the past few days. Also in the capital, an exhibition of stamps honoring the achievements of Chairman Kim Il-Sung was also organized.

The commemoration comes a few days after current Chairman Kim Jong-un, was re-elected as Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, and expressed eagerness to hold a third summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, in his policy speech at the parliament.

In an editorial marking the late founder's 107th birthday, the DPRK’s main newspaper Rodong Sinmun lauded the founder and urged the country to "depend completely" on the current leader and follow his leadership until the end.

A national meeting also took place at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium on April 14th to mark the event.

At the event, Choe Ryong Hae, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and First Vice Chairman of the State Affairs Commission in a report said that April 15th, 1912, the birthday of President Kim Il-Sung, was the day of great fortune when the Korean nation greeted the sun of the great people for the first time in its 5,000 year history and the significant and historical day that marked a new epoch in accomplishing the human cause of independence./.
