India: 1,400 die due to rain and floods

The Union Home Ministry’s National Emergency Response Centre said on September 3rd said that 1,400 people have died from rain and floods across 10 states in India.

Between August 8th and 28th, flash floods ravaged and led more than a million people to seek shelter at relief camps.

The most affected area is said to be the southern state of Kerala where around 500 people have died, nearly 5.5 million are severely affected, and nearly 1.5 million people rendered homeless are now staying in relief camps across the state, reported the Press Trust of India.

As many as 254 people have died in Uttar Pradesh, 210 in West Bengal, 170 in Karnataka, 139 in Maharashtra, 52 in Gujarat, 50 in Assam, 37 in Uttarakhand, 29 in Odisha and 11 in Nagaland.

In 2017, 2,015 people died in rain, floods and landslides, according to figures revealed in Parliament in March. Of these, Bihar alone accounted for more than 500 deaths. In the monsoon seasons in 2015 and 2016, 1,480 and 1,420 deaths were reported.

India’s monsoon rains, which usually last from June to September, claim hundreds of lives every year./.
