According to the JMA, it was the biggest eruption since March 25th.

On March 6th, the 1,421-meter-high volcano that straddles Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures on the southwestern island of Kyushu suddenly erupted for the first time in about seven years.

The agency maintained the alert level at the volcano at 3, which restricts access to the mountain, and issued warnings about the risk of large flying rocks within three kilometers of the crater and pyroclastic flow within two kilometers of the crater.

Shinmoe-dake, a part of the Mount Kirishima cluster of volcanoes, is believed to have formed between 7,300 and 25,000 years ago.

Earlier, eruptions from Shinmoedake have been recorded in 1716, 1717, 1771, 1822, 1959, 1991, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2017.

Japan, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has 110 active volcanoes and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions./.
