Vietnam spends some 5 billion USD importing animal feed

Vietnam spent more than 4.93 billion USD importing animal feed and related raw materials in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 28.4%, according to preliminary statistics released by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Thus, the figure represented 1 billion USD higher than that of 2020 (3.84 billion USD), and was the highest level in the history of importing the commodity group.

The main animal feed and ingredients suppliers to Vietnam were Argentina, the US, Brazil and the EU. In which, imports from Argentina reached 1.66 billion USD, accounting for 33.6% of the total import turnover of animal feed and raw materials of the whole country, up 7.8% year on year.

It was followed by the US with turnover increasing by 61.7% to 817.64 million USD, accounting for 16.6% of the total.

In 2021, import turnover of animal feed and raw materials from the main markets saw increases compared to last year. Specifically, Imports of animal feed and raw materials from Brazil witnessed a sharp rise of 68.4% to 659.69 million USD, while those from the EU and Southeast Asian markets edged up 39.7% and 20.9% to 398.25 million USD and 362.22 million USD, respectively.

The Vietnam Poultry Breeding Association said that Vietnam’s demand for raw materials for animal feed production will reach 28-30 million tons a year in the next 5 years, worth 12-13 billion USD. Of which, more than half of the output, equivalent to 14.5-15 million tons, will be used for the poultry industry./.
