Vietnam sends first engineering team on UN peacekeeping missions

The Ministry of National Defence announced an engineering unit rotation 1 and Vietnam’s Level II field hospital rotation 4 participating in UN peacekeeping missions, during a ceremony on November 17.

This was Vietnam’s first engineering team to join the UN peacekeeping missions.

On behalf of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien acknowledged the efforts as well as the initial results achieved by the interdisciplinary working group together with agencies and units in the Ministry of National Defense, especially the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Military Hospital 175, Military Medical Academy and the Army Corps of Engineers, in directing, operating and deploying participation in UN peacekeeping activities in recent years; and praised the effective support of relevant agencies and units in deploying UN peacekeeping missions.

Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said that the current number of the engineer members is 203, who fully meet the requirements of the UN for professional qualifications, health and foreign languages, have good political qualities and capabilities, and have been carefully selected from 11 military agencies and units.

Together with the Level II Field Hospital, the first engineer team to participate in the UN peacekeeping mission will contribute to providing humanitarian assistance activities, helping the missions to carry out their tasks, contributing to peacekeeping and national reconstruction, bringing peaceful and stable life to indigenous countries, and contributing to the defense of the Fatherland right in peacetime. 

Up to now, Vietnam’s Level II field hospital rotation 4 has basically been completed in terms of personnel, with a total of 71 people, selected from units in the whole army.

In 2021, the hospital will focus on English training, military medical training and training courses organized by the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

In the coming time, the hospital will continue to participate in additional training courses on medical expertise, peacekeeping expertise, pre-deployment training, general practice drills, and training on internal health and military use./.
