Vietnam, Indonesia to bring bilateral trade to USD10 billion

Nguyen Van Nen, Secretary of Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee, has expressed his hope that after COVID-19 is controlled, Vietnam and Indonesia will continue to pursue bilateral trade turnover of USD10 billion.

He made the statement during his reception for outgoing Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Ibnu Hadi on December 7. 

During the reception, Nguyen Van Nen congratulated the Indonesian Ambassador for having been presented the Friendship Order from the Vietnamese Communist Party and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, which he said recognized his contribution to the traditional friendly relationship and the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Indonesia. 

Appreciating the Indonesian Ambassador’s role in promoting bilateral relations between Indonesia and Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh city, Nguyen Van Nen noted that over the past time, economic cooperation between the two countries had been constantly developing, with bilateral trade turnover increasing from USD3.3 billion in 2010 to USD9.1 billion in 2019.

He expressed confidence that Indonesia would soon succeed in the prevention of COVID-19 and gain quick economic recovery, because Indonesia's potential is huge thanks to its young population and strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Informing the Indonesian Ambassador about the socio-economic situation of Ho Chi Minh city, he said that the city targeted to become an economic, financial, commercial, scientific and technological and cultural center of Southeast Asia. “To realize this target, Ho Chi Minh city is making efforts to focus on building a smart city, creative city and financial center,” he added. 

He confirmed that the Indonesian and Vietnamese economies have a lot in common, including a high proportion of young population, a strong entrepreneurial spirit and the development trend of breakthrough technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), block chain and financial technology (Fintech) which will be the new driving force of economic development of the two sides, and also a common point for the two sides to promote cooperation in the future.

He also wished Mr. Ibnu Hadi to be successful in his new position and continue to contribute to the further development of the Indonesia-Vietnam bilateral relationship.

Indonesian Ambassador Ibnu Hadi congratulated Mr. Nguyen Van Nen on accepting the role of the city Party Committee Secretary, and expressed his belief that under his leadership, Ho Chi Minh city will continue to develop, as the largest economic center in Vietnam. 

Informing Mr. Nen of Indonesian businesses’ investment in Vietnam, including in Ho Chi Minh city, he said that many Indonesian businesses in technology, innovation and start-ups had had new developments in Ho Chi Minh city./.
