Vietnamese community in Australia raises AUD500,000 to help refugees

The Vietnamese community in Australia committed to contribute AUD500,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help refugees.

The announcement came at a ceremony in the city of Sydney, and a cheque worth AUD250,000 was presented to the National Director of UNHCR Naomi Steer.

This money was collected from more than 800 people attending a fundraising dinner of the Vietnamese community in Sydney.

In addition, more than AUD250,000 has been donated by the Vietnamese communities in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

At the ceremony, Ms. Steer said the refugee crisis has compelled more than 65 million people to leave their homes due to conflict and violence, of whom children accounted for nearly half.The humanitarian agencies of the United Nations are struggling to meet the basic needs of millions of refugees.

She also expressed gratitude for the meaningful contribution of the Vietnamese community in Australia for refugees./.
