First football tournament for overseas Vietnamese in Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture

The first AVO Open Cup football tournament 2022 has been organized successfully by the Association of Vietnamese in Okinawa (AVO) and Nihon Vietnam Worldmate (NVW) Non-profit Organization at Nishihara Stadium in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, under the patronage of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka.

The football tournament is an activity to prepare for the official establishment of AVO, which is scheduled on June 18.

The tournament gathers strong teams from localities in Okinawa province with hundreds of players who are students, trainees, engineers, and employees from local schools and companies.

Local public opinion is also very interested in the large-scale sporting event of the overseas Vietnamese community with more than 3,000 people in Okinawa. The two largest newspapers of Okinawa Prefecture, the Okinawa Times and the Ryukyu newspaper, sent reporters to cover the tournament.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Interim President of AVO and Head of the Organizing Board of the Tournament, emphasized that the tournament aims to create a healthy and useful playground for sports enthusiasts as well as contribute to strengthening exchanges and solidarity in the Vietnamese community living, studying and working in Okinawa Precture.

She expressed her hope that through this award, the Organizing Board will draw experience as well as discover positive and talented factors in the Vietnamese community in Okinawa to serve sports and cultural activities in the community in the coming time.

Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka Vu Binh thanked the authorities, organizations, businesses and schools in Okinawa for their cooperation and support of the tournament, especially the sympathy, encouragement and support for Vietnamese people in Okinawa to have a harmonious, stable and developing life in the locality.

Ending the tournament, FC Co Dam won the Championship Cup.

The organizing board of the AVO Open Cup looks forward to continuing to receive the patronage and companionship of the Consulate General to organize other football tournaments in the coming time.

On this occasion, the delegation of Vietnam’s Consulate General in Fukuoka had working sessions with the AVO Interim Executive Committee and with local authorities, friendship associations and a number of businesses, which want to cooperate with Vietnam./.
