Uncle Ho statue on Co To island

Those who come to Co To Island in the northern province of Quang Ninh want to spend time visiting and showing their gratitude in front of President Ho Chi Minh’s statute. The statue standing solemnly and looking over the East Sea appearing to protect the island and its residents.

Co To island, situated in the eastern region of Van Don district, holds a very important position in terms of national defence and security. On May 9th, 1961, Uncle Ho visited the island for the first time, bringing a recommendation that although Hanoi capital was far from islands, the Party and Government always cared for the islanders and hoped that the islanders were united and made progress.

To show gratitude for the care from the Party and State and the affection of Uncle Ho, the people and soldiers of the island built President Ho Chi Minh’s statue on the island in 1995. It was built to a height of 9 metres, becoming the largest and most beautiful in the northeastern region of the country.

Around the statue is an exhibition house displaying the artifacts commemorating Uncle Ho’s visit to the island.

Over half of a century has passed since the day Uncle visited Co To island. The island is presently undergoing strong development. Ships going and returning from the mainland seem to shorten the geographic distance between the mainland and the island.

The national power grid brightens roads while the wireless Internet access covers all families. The vitality in rice fields and fruit gardens is overwhelming, making the island and the mainland alike./.
