HCM city to be developed into major economic centre of Southeast Asia

The Ministry of Construction, in association with Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee, on January 23rd announced adjustments to the plan for the construction of Ho Chi Minh city’s metropolitan region by 2030, with a vision to 2050.

The plan aims to develop Ho Chi Minh city into a dynamic and sustainable urban area with an important position in Southeast Asia; a modern economic area and major economic centre of the whole country and the region.

It will also be developed into a centre of commerce-finance, scientific research-service, hi-tech and specialized industry, culture, education-training, science-technology and high-quality health care in the region.

In her speech, Ms. Phan Thi My Linh, Deputy Minister of Construction, said the adjustments to the plan will meet the requirements of the city in comprehensive and close connection with other provinces and cities, and will foster socio-economic development of the whole region, creating favourable conditions for the city to promote its nuclear role.

As planned, the southern hub will cover the whole administrative boundary of its and seven neighbouring localities of Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Long An, Dong Nai, and Tien Giang with a total area of about 30,404 square kilometres.

The plan also defined that the metropolitan region would comprise of sub-regions such as the central urban area, the east, the north-northwest, and the southwest. In addition, there will be key economic corridor axes such the southeast along Highway 51, the east along Highway 1, the north along Highway 13, the northwest along Highway 22 and 22B, and the southwest along Highway 1.

By 2030, the population is forecast to reach around 24-25 million people, including around 18-19 million urban population, 6-7 million rural population; and about 18-19 million workers. The urbanization rate is about 70-75%.

Mr. Tran Vinh Tuyen, Deputy Head of the city People’s Committee, stressed that Ho Chi Minh city would play the key role for localities in the region to develop rapidly and sustainably; share difficulties, challenges and connection in regional distribution in order to promote the potential and strength of every locality in the development of tourism, culture, education, hi-tech agriculture, industry, trade, services and information technology./.
