China remained Vietnam's largest trading partner, but bilateral turnover fell sharply compared to the same period last year.
In the past 7 months, Vietnam's exports to China reached USD30,502 billion, up 1.8% over the same period last year, accounting for 15.6% of the country's total export turnover. Currently, China is Vietnam's second largest export market, after the United States.
The result of an increase of 1.8% was not high compared to recent years, but a positive figure in the context of export difficulties.
Currently, China is an important market for many key export groups such as phones and components; computers, electronic products and components; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts.
Notably, in the first 7 months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports to China reached USD1.99 billion, up 30.8% over the same period last year and accounting for 65% of the country's total vegetable and fruit export turnover. In particular, durian products accounted for half of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to China.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, said that the increase in vegetable and fruit exports in the Chinese market is partly due to the increase in hours of operation at many border gates between Vietnam and China. This showed that the demand from the Chinese market is huge after a long period of decline due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.
In addition, Vietnam has officially exported sweet potatoes to the Chinese market, creating momentum for the growth of this industry. In April 2023, the General Administration of Customs of China approved and granted codes for 70 growing areas and 13 sweet potato packing establishments, making them eligible for official export.
In the opposite direction, in the past 7 months, Vietnam imported USD58,656 billion from China. China maintained its position as the largest import market of Vietnam, accounting for 32.8% of the total import turnover of the country./.
