Russian scholars appreciate Vietnam's remarkable progress

Since September 2, 1945, the day President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square, Hanoi, Vietnam has experienced the most prominent period in its thousands of years of history, according to Russian experts during talks with Sputnik news agency on the 75th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day.
Prof. Vladimir Kolotov from the Saint Petersburg State University reviewed Vietnam’s success after the August Revolution and the National Day on September 2, 1945, including the victory in the resistance war against colonial aggression, national liberation from the colonialism, and victory in the struggle against the US to save and unify the country. “Vietnam has achieved the goal of national unification and is now a sovereign country that consistently protects national interests and has a rapidly developing economy," he said.
Prof. Kolotov also recalled that in 2020, Vietnam once again assumes the role of ASEAN President, and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council with 192 supportive votes out of total 193, one of the largest margins of victory in the history of the United Nations. He emphasized that the above factors have created Vietnam's prestige on the international arena.

Prof. Dr. Vladimir Mazyrin from the Centre for the Study of Vietnam and ASEAN at the Far Eastern Studies Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke highly of Vietnam’s economic achievements during its transition to a market economy, which saw it reach the top 20 fastest growing economies in the world.
“I would like to say that Vietnam is a rare example of a breakthrough developing country that successfully catches up with more developed countries in the region and the world in general," he added.
According to ASEAN statistics, over the past three decades, annual per capita income in Vietnam has increased 27 times and according to Professor Mazyrin, this is a huge leap. He confirmed that Vietnam is among the countries with the most stable economic development, noting that while most regional countries saw a considerable slowdown in growth in the first half of 2020, Vietnam still posted a positive rate.
He quoted experts saying that by 2050, Vietnam will be in the group of the 20 countries with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the world. It currently stands in 32nd position; a major feat compared to 75 years and 35 years ago, when it was still among the poorest nations.
As one of the senior Vietnamese experts from Russia, Dr. Evgeny Kobelev first came to Vietnam to study at the Hanoi General University in 1958 and had the most recent trip to Vietnam less than a year ago. “I have seen a completely different country compared to the first time,” he said. “Thanks to Doi Moi, Vietnam is growing at a record speed in the region."
