(CPV) - The winter volunteer program 2013 with the theme of "Border sentiment" was launched on October 19 in Bac Son commune, Mong Cai city by the Quang Ninh provincial Youth Federation, to help people in difficult situations in the province.
The program aims to support remote, border and island areas with activities such as providing free health examinations and medicines; supporting households of poor young people to escape poverty sustainably through the consultation and help of youth economic models; sponsoring children with especially difficult circumstances; and organizing voluntary blood donation drives.
The funds for implementing the program are mainly from agencies and businesses, both inside and outside province.
On this occasion, the provincial youth federation presented 350 books to cultural houses in villages of Bac Son commune, the youth unions of Cho Ray hospital in Ho Chi Minh city and the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group presented 500 coats to poor children worth over VND100 million and provided VND15 million for drilling a well for people in Hai Son commune; and the youth union of the Mong Cai city Customs Department presented 10 blankets to poor young people’s families in Hai Son commune.
Shortly after the ceremony, the youth union of Cho Ray hospital organized health examinations, delivered medicines and health consultations for nearly 500 local people. In addition, the young doctors of Cho Ray hospital advised people on hygienic practices, and how to prevent diseases in mountainous areas, especially the common diseases in winter.
The volunteers also helped people in Vinh Thuc island commune move breeding facilities and outhouses which are not hygienic to other places and presented coats to poor children.
The winter volunteer program is one of the practical activities to mark the 50th anniversary of establishment of Quang Ninh province (October 30, 1963 – October 30, 2013)./.
