Being a typical city with rapid urbanization, Ho Chi Minh city pays special attention to studying and developing the city into a smart city. The organization of the international smart city conference is a good chance for the city to learn from the experience of foreign countries, discuss solutions on developing a smart city for Ho Chi Minh city and for other cities across the country, and help address urgent issues in many cities, including traffic and urban management, environmental protection and information security, bringing convenience to people and set up social safety and welfare.

Addressing the conference, Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and Secretary of the city Party Committee, said that the building of a smart city was considered one of most effective solutions to promote more rapid and sustainable development of the city, and narrow the gap of development with other cities in the region.

He stressed that the project on building the city into a smart city, which was identified one of the leading tasks, would target to ensure economic growth and look towards a knowledge-based economy; increase the quality of the living and working environment; effectively manage urban work; enhance people’s participation in management; and promote people’s intellect.

Accordingly, the city will focus on realizing two strategies in building a smart city, including smart planning and sustainable development; smart sectoral management, smart citizens and smart businesses.

During the conference, delegates concentrated their discussion on three major issues, including smart cities and the visions of cities’ leaders; digital services of smart cities; and Internet foundation for smart cities.

The event also put forth specific proposals for the building and development of a smart city for Ho Chi Minh city, and introduced information and technological solutions for the city to address issues of concern, including traffic, security, environment, energy and water supply and sewerage.
