The committee discussed the wishes to cease holding positions, stop working, and retire of Tran Tuan Anh, Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee and Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission; and Phan Viet Cuong, member of the 13th Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Quang Nam provincial Party Committee.

Anh was a high-ranking official of the Party and State and entrusted with some important leadership positions by the Party Central Committee and Politburo. As Secretary of the Party Civil Affairs Committee and Minister of Industry and Trade in the 2016 - 2021 tenure, he exerted efforts in leading and directing activities of the industry and trade sector to obtain significant results. However, he bore the political responsibility of a leader for letting many violations occur at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and many officials and Party members break law and thus, be subject to criminal, Party, and administrative punishments. Deeply aware of his responsibility towards the Party and people, he submitted a proposal to cease holding positions, stop working, and retire.

Meanwhile, Cuong was also a high-ranking official of the Party and State and entrusted with some important leadership positions in his locality by the Party Central Committee and Politburo. As Secretary of the Quang Nam provincial Party Committee in the 2015 - 2020 and 2020 - 2025 tenures, he exerted efforts in performing duties. However, he bore the political responsibility of a leader for letting many subordinate Party organisations and members commit violations causing serious consequences and thus, be subject to discipline, some have even been given criminal punishments. Deeply aware of his responsibility towards the Party and people, he submitted a proposal to cease holding positions, stop working, and retire.

Basing on the Party and State’s existing rules and the officials’ personal wishes, the Party Central Committee agreed to allow Anh to cease holding the membership of the Politburo and the Party Central Committee in the 13th tenure, and Cuong to cease holding the membership of the Party Central Committee in the 13th tenure.

At the meeting, the Party Central Committee also considered disciplinary measures against Tran Duc Quan, member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Lam Dong provincial Party Committee, and Nguyen Nhan Chien, former member of the Party Central Committee and former Secretary of the Bac Ninh provincial Party Committee.

Quan and Chien showed degradation in political thought, morality, and lifestyle; had negative acts; infringed the Party’s regulations and the State’s law while performing their assigned responsibilities and tasks, the rules on the things Party members must not do, along with the responsibility for setting good examples. Their violations resulted in very serious consequences, stirred public concern, and caused very bad impacts on local Party organisations and administrations, the Party Central Committee said.

Basing on the content, nature, levels, and consequences of violations and on the Party’s regulations, the Party Central Committee decided to expel Quan and Chien from the Party.

It also assigned the Politburo to direct relevant agencies to carry out procedures in line with regulations./.
