The New Year 2018 celebration of the H’Mong (or Mong) ethnic group in Hanoi took place on January 7th at the Hanoi University of Culture to reinstate the ethnic festival and create opportunity for young people to study about national culture.

The event included the rituals and the celebration. The rituals focused on ceremonies of the God of soil.

The celebration concentrated traditional games such as nem ap, danh yen; putting on traditional clothes; displaying musical instruments and performing folk songs.  During the celebration, the H’Mong also arranged weddings for couples. One of their popular practices was “haib puj” (rough translation: take the wife).

The New Year celebration of the H’Mong is held at the end of the harvest. Therefore, the time for the celebration depends on the crop cycle in each region. It often coincides with the solar calendar and lunar New Year./.
