Forestry export value hits over USD9 billion

(CPV) - Forestry export value reached more than USD9.3 billion in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 15.9%, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Vietnam Administration of Forestry.

Specifically, wooden furniture exports were valued at USD8.7 billion, making up 95% of the total. The sector earned a trade surplus of USD6.99 billion this year. 

Mr. Pham Van Dien, Deputy Head of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, said the country has exploited 27.5 million m3 of forestry plantation, of which 18.5 million m3 was concentrated forestation while the rest is crop area and rubber plantation.

Currently, the country has about 4,500 wood and wooden product processing enterprises, in which 1,863 enterprises directly produce wooden products and 700 are foreign-invested companies.

2018 also witnessed standout results of the sector in international cooperation as Vietnam and the EU officially signed a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) in October in Belgium, opening opportunities in shipping legal wooden products overseas.

In 2019, the sector strives to achieve national forest coverage rate of 41.85%, plant 222,000 ha, gain export growth of 5.5-6% and earn export value of USD10.5 billion./.
