July CPI sees slight increase

(CPV) - The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in July grew 0.18% from the previous month and the index in the Jan-July period rose by 2.61% from the same period last year, marking the lowest seven-month average over the past three years, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Among the 11 main commodity groups, nine experienced price rises, including food and catering services (0.33 percent); education (0.22 percent); culture, entertainment and tourism (0.15 percent), beverage and tobacco (0.12 percent), garments, hats, footwear (0.1%), equipment and household appliances (0.08%), post and telecom (0.01%), medicine and health services (0.02%), other goods and services (0.94%). 

The prices of transportation; and housing, electricity, water and construction materials all saw the same price drop of 0.03 percent.

GSO reported the main factors leading to CPI rise this month are price rise uptrend of input materials; increase in basic salary of cadres, civil servants, officials and armed forces from July 1st, and the complicated situation with African swine fever. 

According to the office, basic inflation in July 2019 increased 0.23% from the previous month and 2.04% year on year. The average rate for the seven month period went up 1.89% compared to the same period last year. 

The VND/USD exchange rate in July decreased by 0.56%, while domestic gold prices were around VND3.97 million (USD171.06) per tael, 4.78% higher than the previous month./.
