A ceremony to receive certificate to recognise Nguyen Tieu Festival of the Hoa (Vietnamese of Chinese origin) as a national intangible cultural heritage has taken place at District 5, HCM City.

The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the first lunar month by Vietnamese people, especially the Hoa community living mostly in Ho Chi Minh city, to mark the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. During the occasion, people often pray for peace and wish for luck in the new year.
The Hoa group (Vietnamese of Chinese origin) in Ho Chi Minh city number around 500,000. They live mainly in Cho Lon (District 5, District 6, District 10 and District 11), which is seen as a local Chinatown.
On this occasion, a special program re-enacting part of the festival, which has been preserved by the local group over the past three decades, was held.
In addition, musical and art performances, a film screening, a parade and an exhibition on lanterns and ink wash painting also took place./.
