In early March, mulberry fields in Hanoi’s Hiep Thuan commune, Phuc Tho district, are filled with ripening fruits.
Being grown on an area of some two hectares, the trees produce fruits which farmers harvest once a year.

“My family plants 30 mulberry trees on 400 square metres of land, with each tree producing 80-90 kilograms,” said gardener Do Thi Can.

Harvesting mulberry requires much care to prevent the fruits from being crushed. “My family’s 20 mulberry trees, at 6 years old  produce fruits and we have harvested the fruits since February,” said gardener Nguyen Thi Hoa, adding that each season, she harvests some two tons of mulberry.

Good quality mulberries

According to gardeners, no fertilizer or pesticide is used from 40 days before the harvest, so that the mulberries ripen naturally.

Harvested mulberries are put under the shade and collected in soft buckets.

Each day, two people can harvest some 50 kilograms of mulberries in nine hours.

Traders buy mulberries at the field.

Each day, Ms Thuy buys some 600 kilograms of mulberries, at VND10,000-15,000 per kilogram.

High quality mulberries wait to be transported to Hanoi, Da Nang, Quang Binh and Quang Tri for consumption.
