Kien Giang province increases hi-tech application in agricultural production

The southern province is applying high technology in plantation to develop modern production for high quality commodities and high productivity, bringing high added value, according to Do Minh Nhut, Deputy Director of the Kien Giang provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Accordingly, high technologies will be applied in the selection of rice seedlings that are able to bear salt and drought while research and production of some plantations such as pineapples, orchids and bananas will continue and high technology will be applied in vegetable production, thus developing hi-tech urban agricultural zone for serving residents and tourists in Rach Gia city, Ha Tien town and Phu Quoc island district.

Efforts will also be made to establish organic rice production in U Minh Thuong district by 2020.

According to Nguyen Van Tam, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2017, rice production meeting the standard of Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP) was on nearly 47,700 hectares across 163 fields in 11 localities, using materials and contracts on product consumption from 15 companies. The province is striving to raise the area of the rice production meeting VietGAP to 100,000 hectares by 2020.

So far, many agricultural and fishery products, including shrimp, bananas, pineapples and vegetables, have been recognized as meeting VietGap standard, while over four hectares of pepper have received GlobalGAP and the organic rice production model in Thanh An cooperative in Dong Thanh commune, An Minh district has reached the standard of the international organic certificate by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)./.
