During the workshop “Update on Vietnamese labour market No. 18” held on September 18th, Dao Quang Vinh, Director of the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs, said that some sectors would need increasingly greater number of labourers, including beverage production, textile, printing, production of rubber and plastic products, and water sewerage. “Meanwhile, some sectors, such as agricultural, fisheries and forestry production, oil and natural gas exploitation, mining, production of engine vehicles, production of wooden products, are forecast to need smaller number of labourers,” he added.

According to Mr. Vinh, in the second quarter, over 54 million people have jobs, an increase of over 1% compared to the same period last year, with the largest reduction of jobs in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries production (nearly 180,000), followed by processing industry, financial and banking activities, administrative and supportive activities; and the most rapid increase of jobs in retail and wholesale, automobile and motorbike repair, construction, education and training.

Notably, compared to the first quarter, the number of unemployed labourers with university degrees was reduced to nearly 127,000, and those of college degrees reduced to 71,000.

“The unemployment among Vietnamese youth of 7% is rather low compared to the current unemployment rate in Asia of up to 10% among youth, even 20%-30% in some countries,” Mr. Vinh went on to say./.
