(CPV) - The impressive performance of 15-year-old swimmer Nguyen Huu Kim Son has helped the nation top the Southeast Asian (SEA) Age Group Swimming Championship which concluded at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Swimming Pool in Brunei on November 12th.

In three days of competition, Kim Son bagged a total 14 golds (nine individuals, and five relays), even set seven new records in individuals, three relays and honoured “The best players in 14-15 age-group” Cup.

Notably, he set a new record with a time of 3:56.46s in the men’s 14-15 400m freestyle, eclipsing the old time of 4:01.01s set by his compatriot Nguyen Huy Hoang in December 2015.

Son, under the guidance of “cetus” Anh Vien’s coach Dang Anh Tuan, also made a new SEA Age Group record after clocking a time of 2:06.47s in the 200m medley category, surpassing a five-year record of 2:06.50s previously set by his compatriot Tran Duy Khoi in June 2012.

He met four “A” standards of junior Olympics, and hopes to seek a place for a junior tour in Argentina next year.

Thanks to Son’s results, Vietnam earned a total of 51 golds, 27 silvers and 13 bronzes to take the lead in the medal tally.

This year’s event attracted 235 swimmers from nine countries, competing in three age groups of 13 and under 13, 14-15 and 16-18.

In the recent SEA Games 2017 in Malaysia, Kim Son bagged the gold medal and broke the SEA Games record in the men’s 400m medley competition with a time of 4:22.12s.

At the same event held last year in Thailand, the nation also triumphed with 39 golds, 39 silvers and 27 bronzes./.
