Contemplating Bac Son Valley as rice harvest approaches

At the end of July and in early August, Bac Son valley is dyed with the yellow color of ripening rice, creating a unique scene as viewed from above.


Bac Son is a mountainous district belonging to the Bac Son arch of the northeastern region in Lang Son province. It is 160 km north of Hanoi. From Hanoi, follow national highway 3 to Thai Nguyen, then along national highway 1B nearly 80 km. The valley is famous for both historical sites and beautiful scenery.

The valley lies among limestone mountains and is dotted with rivers threading their way through vast rice fields, creating a charming and attractive picture. Its residents including Kinh people and Nung, Dao, and Tay ethnic people.

It has a large flat terrain, with favourable weather conditions for rice cultivation, and rice ripening season falls at the end of July through mid-November. However, the rice fields are not planted at the same time.

The time to capture the beautiful valley is from the end of July to the start of August, as the sky is clear and cloudless and it is also the time to start the harvest.

Travelers can capture the whole landscape of Bac Son by climbing Na Lay mountain, at 600 meters above sea level. It takes about an hour to reach the top of the mountain in the middle of the town./.
